The Beastly Chronicles wallpaper is based on the short stories of Edwardian writer Saki (H.H. Munro). I wanted to cover a wall with narrative that could be viewed as a pattern or a series of intertwining stories.
The wallpaper incorporates seven of Saki’s tales – Esme – the hyena and the fateful car; the prowling Gabriel-Ernest; Pan and the stag from The Music on the Hill; Martha feeding the poultry in The Cobweb, Tobermory strolling in the garden; the humming birds, parrots, pigs and wolf in The Storyteller chasing the little horribly good little girl. Most central to the design is the story Sredni Vashtar. The house is based on drawings made at the actual house in North Devon, where Saki lived as a child with two maiden aunts, and which certainly inspired Sredni Vashtar.
As seen on Channel 4 programme Kirstie's Homemade Homea and made by Emma Molony.
